About My own shop uses solar power
For almost a decade, I’ve dreamed of building an off-grid solar system to power my woodworking, provide reliable back-up power for my home, and reduce the number of 2-stroke engines in my life. This was finally the year where I had the time and resources to do it. My workshop isn’t big.

We use solar as our main source of power. There are 10, 85 watt (old panels. ) on two tracker units that follow the sun east to west. We have a 900 watt wind generator to back up the solar and a 10kw propane generator that backs these up. The house is a two story Santa fe style and we are on 110 acres. I recently set up my shop in the 1st floor .
With no electrical power run to the shop, Lee designed and installed a system that generates electricity from the sun. Two 150-watt, 12-volt panels on the roof paired with a 100-amp, 12-volt deep-cycle battery make up the heart of the solar-energy system. A 120-volt inverter connected to the battery supplies a conventional power strip.

6 FAQs about [My own shop uses solar power]
Should you buy a shed or solar power system?
Sheds and solar power are a natural fit. Solar power is environmentally friendly, quiet and requires little maintenance once installed. Solar panels have no moving parts, so there’s nothing to break (on that component, anyway). Reputable solar kits also come with warranties for the products and power distribution, sometimes as long as 25 years.
Can you put solar panels in an outbuilding?
If you have an outbuilding that isn’t wired for electricity, it isn’t good for much except storage. Add a solar panel system, though, and the space becomes much more useful — without increasing your monthly utility bills. Photovoltaic power will let you transform an unused space into your own workshop, man cave or she-shed.
Does solar work everywhere?
Solar doesn't work everywhere. You can't put a solar panel under a rock and expect it to produce power. Neither can you place it in the shade. Ideally, solar needs a clear, unobstructed view of the sun for as many hours of the day as possible. In the northern hemisphere, that means solar panels should face south.
Can you build a solar-powered workshop from scratch?
Ben Uyeda of HomeMade Modern, an experienced DIYer and architect, considered building a solar-powered workshop from scratch. However, building a shed from scratch is labor intensive. Find out how Ben customized his pre-fabricated Tuff Shed into a solar-powered workshop. I love designing and building.
Are solar panels a good investment?
Solar power is environmentally friendly, quiet and requires little maintenance once installed. Solar panels have no moving parts, so there’s nothing to break (on that component, anyway). Reputable solar kits also come with warranties for the products and power distribution, sometimes as long as 25 years. They might last longer than your shed!
Can you store solar power at night?
You can store your solar power for use at night or in power outages. This is ideal for homeowners in certain areas who would otherwise have to pay higher peak rates for grid electricity in the evenings or at night. However, if you have good net metering in your area and power outages are minimal, a standard grid-tie system may be your best choice.
